Descending Night
With one eye open
I see you
close the curtain
to make the room dark.
Turn down your music
to make the room quiet.
Sleep, you say,
you’re tired
And I know that you want me to stay.
The night is descending
and you have been alone
far too long.
So I close my eyes
and enjoy the attention.
Feeling needed
in your life.
Feeling safe
in the cocoon of your room.
Feeling loved
in the warmth of your embrace.
As you stretch out beside me
your heart beats
a song meant for me.
And I drift off
for a few hours.
